Are you silently suffocating your organs to an early death? What do you need to know now?
Dr. Vliet’s Health Tip
Did you know that the largest organ in the human body is not the skin (as many of us were taught in high school science class) but rather the endothelial lining of our microvascular system?
When we think of the vascular system, larger arteries and veins come to mind like the aorta or our coronary or carotid arteries, or the veins we can see where blood is drawn. These are of critical to our survival, and when they fail or are blocked it is often ‘game over’ for life. But on a day-to-day basis, it is the 60,000 linear miles of capillaries in our microvascular system we are not even aware of that keep our tissues healthy and organs functioning to sustain life. With every heartbeat, the heart pumps blood through the microvascular system nourishing the trillions of cells that make up your organs. The microvascular system makes up more than 99% of the contact area between the blood and organs.
This 60,000 miles of high speed highway of capillaries (our microvascular sustem) is the “organ” for the exchange of nutrients to nourish the cells and remove metabolic waste products. Our organs are healthiest when they are nourished with vital nutrients and oxygen, and waste and carbon dioxide are effectively removed.
When our microvascular system begins to fail because the capillaries are damaged or clogged due to disease, environmental chemicals, the wrong foods, vaccines, aging and other health conditions, our vital organs like brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, GI tract, muscles and all the rest do not get the nutrients they need, resulting in starvation of our organs that leads to either gradual or rapid declines in health—depending on how widespread the damage.
Until recently, the deterioration in the microvascular system has been overlooked as the starting point of several major health conditions. In the past, it was the larger blood vessels that got the focus of medical science. But without continuous delivery of nutrients and waste removal at the microvascular level, we are at greater risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, dementia, depression, erectile dysfunction, inflammatory disorders and cancer metastasis.
Vascular damage occurs from many causes. Some of the most prevalent include high blood pressure, ischemia, hyperglycemia, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, viral infections, vaccine damage, environmental assaults, high fat diets, stress, smoking, genetics or just aging.
Vascular damage includes damage at the microvascular level of the capillaries and the endothelial lining which includes a micro-thin gel layer called the glycocalyx. The glycocalyx is the inner most layer and acts like a “Teflon shield” that coats the inside of all healthy blood vessels throughout the body and protects the endothelium from the mechanical shear stress of blood flow.
So why should we care about this fuzzy jello-like layer? The answer is simple but is urgent to heed: when it is damaged or is no longer there, cells and organs start to lose critical function, according to CEO of MicroVascular Solutions, Dr. Diane Bouis. “As the glycocalyx erodes, we see correlations with disease states.”
Dysfunction of the glycocalyx leads to capillary leakage, platelet aggregation, edema, increased inflammation, hypercoagulability, and loss of vascular responsiveness. One example is atherosclerosis, which is plaque in your blood vessels. As we age, our blood vessels age with us, and we all get some fatty patches. But over time, if that protective gel layer is destroyed, we get a more pro-inflammatory state that damages the slick “Teflon” coating and fatty plaques begin to form. Blood flow slows, platelets can aggregate and lead to blood clots. You may be looking at potential infarct or stroke if a clot moves into the heart or brain.
Edema is another common consequence of damaged glycocalyx. When liquid permeates out of the vessels and into the tissues swelling occurs. Fluid can accumulate in your legs, feet, and other parts of the body impacting functionality and the beginning of organ starvation.
Damage to the microvascular system manifests in different ways for different people. One person may experience kidney failure while another person may have hypertension. This is why we should care about the health of our microvascular system and head the early signs before complications develop and critical organs begin to fail.

I have good news to help you directly improve the health of your Glycocalyx! Endocalyx Pro™ is an over the counter supplement that we have made available through our Truth for Health store, which we decided to include based on the extensive medical and scientific research documenting its action, demonstrated benefits and safety (see partial list of references at the end of today’s TFH News).
According to the company, the attributes of Endocalyx Pro™ include:
Regenerates the Microcirculation System
Is the only proprietary, patented anti-aging supplement that has been clinically shown to maintain a healthy glycocalyx.
Provides the anti-aging building blocks needed for a strong and vital glycocalyx, strengthening this micro-thin shield that protects the heart, arteries, microcirculation and veins.
Helps keep blood vessels slick, smooth and protected, from the largest arteries and veins to the tiniest capillaries. Slick vessels makes it harder for plaque to form keeping blood flowing freely while optimizing circulation throughout the entire body.
Allows more efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, organs and for the removal of waste.
Endocalyx Pro™ also helps reverse hypoxia which is low oxygenation at the cellular level and in that sense – organ suffocation.
For me, a big attractions of this product is the all-natural ingredients. Endocalyx Pro™ contains a patented vegan formulation with three classes of compounds: restorative, regenerative, and protective. The seven ingredients include: a polysaccharide made with a brown seaweed called Laminaria Japonica certified to contain a minimum extract rate of 85% fucoidan sulfate. Fucoidan helps repair the glycocalyx and prevents breakdown by inhibiting the heparinase activity. Fucoidan sulfate also helps provide structural stability and dimension to the glycocalyx.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is another restorative polysaccharide enabling repair of the glycocalyx matrix. HA is a natural substance found in the skin, eyes, joints and tissues and is a humectant, which means it retains moisture. As we age, our bodies produce less HA which contributes to dryness and other signs of aging. HA is also known for wound healing and is a major component of the glycocalyx. HA’s ability to interact with other glycocalyx components and its role in regulating barrier permeability contributes to its importance in the repair process.
Glucosamine sulfate is a component of the glycocalyx precursors and provides the building blocks for glycocalyx synthesis and boosts endothelial cell glycocalyx production to regenerate and improve the integrity of the protective glycocalyx layer.
The polyphenol and flavonoids of Olive (fruit) extract, artichoke (leaf) extract, red and white grapes (fruit) extract, and superoxide dismutase (from bitter melon concentrate) are potent antioxidants that work synergistically and can survive oral intake and arrive in the vascular compartment at clinically effective protective dosages. These antioxidants help neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the glycocalyx, can help prevent shedding or degradation of the glycocalyx – a key factor in endothelial dysfunction, may promote the formation of new glycocalyx components, and improve flow-mediated dilation and overall vascular health.
Clinical Applications, from the regulatory-approved product data sheet:
Strengthens the micro-thin shield that protects the heart, arteries, microcirculation and veins*
Promotes healthy organs associated with vascular health*
Promotes the bioavailability and bioactivity of nitric oxide*
Helps support nutrient and hormone exchange*
Daily use delivers the building blocks to strengthen the glycocalyx gel barrier*
