If you are having these problems, this health tip will provide some tips to help repair the connective tissues involved! Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen in the body and plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of many tissues, particularly connective tissues like skin, ligaments, tendons, bones and the main component of the interstitial matrix. Type I collagen provides strength, elasticity, and support to the body tissues. Decreased collagen production leads sagging skin, fine lines, brittle nails, inflamed tendons (“tendonitis”), brittle/less elastic tendons and ligaments more likely to tear or rupture. Healthy collagen is also essential for healing and wound repair.
We have to stay physically active to be healthy, moving our body every day, throughout the day. But what happens when movement becomes painful? Pain often limits physical activity and then inactivity tends to make movement stiff and more painful. It is a vicious cycle that often leads to more connective tissue and cardiovascular-metabolic problems.
Our joints need the support of healthy tendons and ligaments for stability and pain-free motion. This is a major challenge for millions of people who suffer from stiffness, limited mobility and chronic pain syndromes which tend to exacerbate as we get older. In fact, 1 in 5 adults experience joint pain and the majority of those are 45 and older. The good news is that tendons and ligaments that surround and support our joints have an intrinsic capacity for repair…IF we provide the nutrients needed for this repair process.
Tendons and ligaments have a slower and more limited ability for self-repair than other tissues and need a little assistance with supplements. Self-repair is controlled by resident fibroblasts (tenocytes in tendons) and their surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM). These fibroblasts are responsible for producing the ECM which includes the proteoglycans (the protein/mucopolysaccharide complex) and collagen needed for tissue repair. The key is to stimulate this process.
Research supports that the ingredients in our TruTendon™ & Ligament Support do just that: stimulate the proliferation of tendon and ligament cells and thereby promotes the body’s ability for tendon and ligament repair.
TruTendon™ and Ligament Support provides a proprietary blend of type I collagen and mucopolysaccharides combined with vitamin C supports the structural and functional needs of tendons and ligaments. So, let’s look at each of these ingredients and how they support healthy joints.
Type I Collagen
Adult tendons are comprised mainly of type-I collagen molecules that are hierarchically organized into structural units that provide support and function. The molecular structure and organization of tendon and ligament collagen fibrils are key determinants in the ability of these tissues to endure mechanical force and fuel self-repair. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements, particularly Type I, can reduce osteoarthritis pain and improve joint function, and even may help build and repair damaged cartilage in arthritis. And, according to the Arthritis Foundation, has been shown to significantly increase BMD (bone mineral density) in postmenopausal women and considerably lowered high blood pressure.
NOTE OF CAUTION:
If you take separate collagen supplements, we recommend against bovine (cow)-derived products that are mostly derived from cow hides and hooves from animals with unknown sourcing and health. We recommend you instead choose the safer, wild-caught marine collagen peptides.
Mucopolysaccharides
Collagen provides much of tendon/ligament structure and strength, BUT it is the mucopolysaccharides that provide the “glue” that holds them together and allows them to stretch, flex, bend, and maintain their resilience.
Mucopolysaccharides are known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and are a critical component of ECM and are important in maintaining structural integrity, lubrication, and spacing of collagen fibers. Mucopolysaccharides have been shown to increase collagen and non-collagenous protein synthesis in cultures of bovine tenocytes (the primary cell type found within tendons) and ligament cells and may also contribute to symptomatic relief by virtue of their anti-inflammatory action.
Vitamin C is a cofactor in the production of collagen and is needed for the hydroxylation of proline and lysine residues essential for collagen production. Vitamin C also helps maintain tendon/ligament structure and biomechanical properties by stimulating collagen biosynthesis and acting as an antioxidant. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C help protect tendons and ligaments from oxidative damage, neutralizing free radicals that can damage tissue and contribute to inflammation. Vitamin C helps protect the collagen structure of tendons and ligaments maintaining their integrity by reducing damage from oxidative stress. Studies have shown that vitamin C with bioflavonoids improves tendon healing, as well as wound healing after surgeries. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids helps reduce scarring and improving tendon strength after injury.
Comfort
Tennis elbow, plantar fascia, Achilles tendonitis, and rotator inflammation are common causes of pain for many people. Results were impressive when these conditions were studied specifically using TruTendon & Ligament Support supplementation. For three months, all participants received 20 to 30 physical therapy sessions, and the study group received, in addition, two capsules per day of TruTendon™ & Ligament Support. Comfort, quality of life, and physiotherapist assessments were performed before and the intervention. Patients given TruTendon™ & Ligament Support showed statistically significant improvements after only two to three months of supplementation compared to controls. The researchers concluded that supplementing with TruTendon™ & Ligament Support improved comfort level and biomechanical properties without adverse effects. (See Product Reference Sheet)
Several other human studies using TruTendon™ & Ligament Support have demonstrated its positive effects on tendon comfort and structure. In a randomized placebo-controlled study (n = 60) designed to test the effects of TruTendon™ & Ligament Support versus placebo on Achilles, supraspinatus, lateral epicondyle, and plantar fascia comfort and tendon structure, Binh et al found that subjects taking TruTendon™ & Ligament Support (two caps/day) had significantly greater comfort at 90 days. At the end of the study, ultrasound assessment showed no signs of structural issues in the supplemented group.
In another prospective, randomized, and controlled trial of 59 subjects who were assigned to one of three groups: eccentric training, eccentric training plus TruTendon™ & Ligament Support, or passive stretching plus TruTendon™ & Ligament Support, and compared to physical therapy alone, Balius et al found that supplementation with TruTendon™ & Ligament Support provided additional benefits associated with comfort at rest and exercise recovery as well as changes in tendon thickness and vascularization to further support overall joint health.
